Our Mission:

The Bellydancers of Color Association (BOCA) was formed to celebrate the sister/brotherhood, strength and beauty of people of color in relation to bellydance and other traditional forms of dance.

Although we focus to unite dancers of African descent, Hispanic/Latino, Pacific Islander, Asian, Native America, Rom, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, East Indian, etc. in a cohesive organization all are welcome.

In addition, BOCA's mission is to:

  • Build strong and healthy bonds among dancers of color through networking opportunities thus demonstrating mutual support

  • Enlighten members to the historically accurate roots and purposes of bellydance as a healing form of movement. Illuminate obscure historical facts about this dance thus dispelling long held myths and misconceptions that have resulted in a distortion of this dance form

  • Enlighten members to history and impact that people of color have made in the world of dance

  • Encourage holistic fitness through dance mind, body and spirit. Assert realistic and positive body images

  • Provide an extensive directory of BOCA dance performers, teachers, troupes and musicians for the general public to access

  • Commit to the preservation of bellydance and other forms of multicultural expression

  • Encourage BOCA members to endeavor in classes that strengthen understanding of traditional movements and rhythms and connection to the drum

  • Inspire dancers of color by honoring the contributions and sacrifices of great and innovative dancers of color who have paved the way for us

  • Providing continuing education thorough the annual BOCA conference and quarterly newsletter

  • Provide a promotional avenue for members to disseminate info regarding upcoming events, classes, performances and/or workshops

  • Educate young people by providing cultural enrichment, encouraging physical fitness and fostering positive interactions with role models and peers via BOCA sponsored workshops and programs

  • Encourage BOCA members to provide outreach to elderly populations to teach dance and exercise skills that improve the quality of life
